What is it used for?
Piperacillin and tazobactam is an injectable antibiotic used in hospitals to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and blood. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Piperacillin kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall. Tazobactam helps protect piperacillin from enzymes that can otherwise make some bacteria resistant to it.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, and medical advice. It should not be self-administered.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, and pain or irritation at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to penicillin, cephalosporin or other antibiotics, kidney disease, bleeding or blood disorders, or previous antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, or unusual bleeding. Use only when prescribed and complete the prescribed treatment.
