What is it used for?
Metronidazole intravenous infusion is used to treat serious infections caused by anaerobic bacteria. It may also be prescribed for certain protozoal infections, as determined by a doctor.

How does it work?
It enters susceptible bacteria and protozoa and damages their genetic material, stopping them from growing and causing infection.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given slowly into a vein by a doctor or nurse, usually in a hospital or clinic. The dose, infusion rate and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and must be decided by the treating doctor. It must not be self-administered.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness, metallic taste, and dark-coloured urine. Pain, redness or irritation may occur at the infusion site.

Precautions
Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after the last dose. Tell the doctor about allergies to metronidazole or similar medicines, liver disease, nervous-system disorders, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Inform the doctor about medicines such as warfarin, lithium, phenytoin, phenobarbital or disulfiram. Report numbness, tingling, seizures, severe rash, or unusual weakness promptly.
