What is it used for?
Folic acid 5 mg is used to prevent or treat folate deficiency and the related type of anaemia. It may also be prescribed during pregnancy when a higher-strength folic acid supplement is needed, such as for prevention of certain birth defects.
How does it work?
Folic acid provides folate, a vitamin needed for making DNA and healthy red blood cells. It also supports normal growth and development of the baby during pregnancy.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. It can usually be taken with or without food. Do not change the dose or duration without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, or a mild skin rash may occur. Serious allergic reactions are rare.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about vitamin B12 deficiency or unexplained anaemia, as folic acid may improve the anaemia while allowing nerve damage from B12 deficiency to continue. Tell the doctor about all medicines being taken, especially medicines for epilepsy. During pregnancy, use the prescribed strength and duration only.
