What is it used for?
Meropenem is an injectable antibiotic used in hospitals to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, blood, and brain. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Meropenem is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, age, and medical condition. It should not be self-injected or stopped early without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, skin rash, and pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, penicillin, cephalosporin, or other antibiotics, and about any history of seizures or kidney disease. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, seizures, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Antibiotics should be used only when prescribed.
