What is it used for?
Meropenem with sulbactam is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, particularly infections caused by bacteria that may resist some other antibiotics. It is generally used in hospitals or under close medical supervision.

How does it work?
Meropenem kills bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall. Sulbactam blocks enzymes made by some bacteria that can otherwise reduce the effect of antibiotics.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given as an injection or infusion by a healthcare professional. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function and medical advice. It should not be self-administered.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, skin rash and pain, redness or swelling at the injection site may occur. Changes in liver or blood test results are also possible.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, sulbactam, penicillins, cephalosporins or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney disease. Tell the doctor about a history of seizures or brain disorders, and about use of valproate medicines. Seek medical attention for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can cause resistance.
