What is it used for?
Ampicillin is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, including some infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and digestive system. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
Ampicillin kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by a doctor. Follow the prescribed schedule and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them for a different illness.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, and skin rash may occur.
Precautions
Do not use if there has been a previous serious allergy to ampicillin, penicillin, or related antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, or breastfeeding before use. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or persistent or severe diarrhoea.
