What is it used for?
Albendazole is an antiparasitic medicine used to treat infections caused by intestinal worms, such as roundworms, hookworms, pinworms and whipworms. It may also be prescribed for certain other worm infections.

How does it work?
It damages the worms' ability to absorb nutrients, causing them to die and be removed from the body.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by a doctor or pharmacist. Follow the recommended dose and treatment duration for the specific worm infection. It may be taken with food, unless otherwise advised. Do not self-treat persistent or repeated worm infections without medical advice.

Common side effects
Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache and dizziness may occur. Some people may have temporary changes in liver function tests.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is liver disease or an allergy to albendazole. Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or if planning pregnancy; it is generally avoided in early pregnancy unless specifically prescribed. For prolonged or repeated treatment, medical monitoring and blood or liver tests may be needed. Seek medical advice if severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual bruising, or a severe skin reaction occurs.
