What is it used for?
Albendazole is used to treat infections caused by intestinal worms, such as roundworms, hookworms, pinworms and whipworms. It may also be prescribed for certain other parasitic infections by a doctor.
How does it work?
It stops parasitic worms from absorbing and using glucose, which causes them to die.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type of worm infection, age and body weight. Do not self-treat or repeat the treatment without medical advice.
Common side effects
Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache and dizziness may occur. Longer or higher-dose treatment may cause abnormal liver tests or hair loss.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is liver disease or pregnancy, or if pregnancy is being planned. Children may require age- and weight-based dosing. Longer treatments may require blood counts and liver-function tests. Seek medical advice if severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual bruising, or a severe rash occurs.
