What is it used for?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the lungs, throat, ears, skin and other parts of the body. It does not work against viral infections such as common colds or flu.
How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day. Complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve, unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine.
Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, vomiting and headache.
Precautions
Tell a healthcare professional about any allergy to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, liver disease, heart rhythm problems or low potassium levels. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, severe rash, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
