What is it used for?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the throat, ears, chest, skin and other parts of the body. It does not work against viral infections such as common colds or flu.
How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food, and complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, vomiting and headache.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics. Tell the doctor about liver disease, heart rhythm problems, or medicines that may affect heart rhythm. Seek urgent medical help for severe allergic symptoms, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
