What is it used for?
Ceftazidime is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, abdomen, blood and brain. It may also be used for infections caused by certain bacteria such as Pseudomonas.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How to take/use it
This medicine is usually given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a healthcare professional. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, itching, and pain or swelling at the injection site.

Precautions
Inform the healthcare professional about any allergy to ceftazidime, other cephalosporins, penicillins or related antibiotics, and about kidney disease. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe rash, seizures, or severe or persistent diarrhoea during or after treatment.
