What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, ears, lungs, urinary tract and other areas when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall, which helps clear the infection.
How to take/use it
Take this medicine exactly as prescribed. It may be taken with or without food. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve, unless a doctor tells otherwise. Do not share antibiotics with others or use leftover medicine.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and headache may occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to cefixime, cephalosporins or penicillin-type antibiotics, or if there is kidney disease. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially with blood or mucus. Use only when prescribed for a bacterial infection.
