What is it used for?
Sildenafil is mainly used to treat erectile dysfunction (difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sexual activity). It may also be prescribed for pulmonary hypertension, but the dose and use differ.

How does it work?
It helps relax blood vessels and increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, helping produce an erection. It does not increase sexual desire and does not work without sexual stimulation.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by a doctor. Do not take more than prescribed or use it more often than directed. It can be taken with or without food, but a heavy or high-fat meal may delay its effect. Do not use it with other medicines for erectile dysfunction unless advised by a doctor.

Common side effects
Headache, flushing, indigestion, blocked or runny nose, dizziness, nausea, and temporary changes in vision.

Precautions
Do not use sildenafil with nitrate medicines for chest pain or with riociguat, as this can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. Tell the doctor about heart disease, low blood pressure, recent stroke or heart attack, liver or kidney problems, or use of alpha-blockers. Seek urgent medical help for an erection lasting more than 4 hours, sudden loss of vision or hearing, chest pain, or severe dizziness.
