What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone injection is an antibiotic used to treat various serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, blood, skin and other tissues. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall, which stops the infection from spreading.

How to take/use it
This injection is given into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection. Complete the prescribed course unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in liver function tests.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to ceftriaxone, penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash. It should be used in newborn babies only under specialist medical advice, especially if they have jaundice or are receiving calcium-containing intravenous fluids.
