What is it used for?
Cefoperazone with sulbactam is a prescription injectable antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin and soft tissues, when caused by susceptible bacteria. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Cefoperazone kills bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall. Sulbactam helps cefoperazone work against bacteria that can otherwise resist some antibiotics.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a healthcare professional. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and should be decided by the prescriber. Complete the prescribed course unless advised otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, rash, itching, and pain or irritation at the injection site may occur. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a severe skin rash.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to penicillin, cephalosporin or other antibiotics. Tell the doctor if there is liver disease, kidney disease, a bleeding or clotting problem, or use of blood-thinning medicines. Cefoperazone may increase bleeding risk in some people. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for the period advised by the doctor, as cefoperazone can cause an unpleasant reaction with alcohol. Use only under medical supervision.
