What is it used for?
Vildagliptin 50 mg + metformin 500 mg is used with diet and exercise to control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It helps improve blood glucose control when one medicine alone is not enough.

How does it work?
Vildagliptin helps the body release insulin when blood sugar is high and reduces excess glucose production. Metformin mainly reduces glucose production by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet whole and do not stop treatment without medical advice. Do not take extra doses if a dose is missed; follow the instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain or discomfort, vomiting, reduced appetite, headache, dizziness and a metallic taste. Low blood sugar may occur, especially when used with insulin or sulfonylure medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, heart failure, heavy alcohol use, or a history of pancreatitis. Kidney function should be checked during treatment. Seek medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual weakness, breathing difficulty or severe drowsiness. This medicine is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Inform the doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding, and before surgery or procedures involving contrast dye.
