What is it used for?
Used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
Vildagliptin helps the body release more insulin when blood sugar is high and reduces the release of hormones that raise blood sugar. Metformin reduces glucose production by the liver and helps the body use insulin more effectively.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, usually with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow with water and do not crush or chew unless advised. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain or discomfort, vomiting, headache, dizziness and reduced appetite. Low blood sugar may occur, especially when used with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, heart failure, heavy alcohol use, or a history of pancreatitis. Kidney function may need to be checked during treatment. Seek medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual weakness, breathing difficulty or extreme sleepiness. Avoid excessive alcohol. Inform the doctor before surgery or an X-ray scan using an iodinated contrast dye.
