What is it used for?
Used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may be prescribed when blood sugar is not adequately controlled with metformin alone or other treatment.

How does it work?
Vildagliptin helps the body release insulin when blood sugar is high and reduces excess sugar production by the liver. Metformin mainly reduces sugar production by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, usually with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet whole and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. If a dose is missed, follow the instructions provided by the prescriber or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain or discomfort, vomiting, reduced appetite, headache and dizziness. Low blood sugar may occur, especially when used with other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, heart failure, heavy alcohol use, or any planned surgery or contrast-dye scan. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or unusual sleepiness. Kidney function may need monitoring, and long-term use may reduce vitamin B12 levels. This medicine is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
