What is it used for?
Vildagliptin + metformin is used with diet and exercise to control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes when blood sugar is not adequately controlled with metformin alone or when both medicines are needed. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
Vildagliptin helps the body release more insulin when blood sugar is high and reduces excess sugar production. Metformin mainly reduces sugar production by the liver and helps the body use insulin better.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Swallow the tablet as directed. Continue the recommended diet, exercise and blood sugar monitoring.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain or discomfort, reduced appetite, headache and dizziness may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when used with insulin or sulfonylurea medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, heart failure, heavy alcohol use, or a history of pancreatitis. Seek urgent medical help for severe, persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual extreme tiredness, breathing difficulty or severe weakness. Long-term metformin use may reduce vitamin B12 levels. Kidney function may need checking during treatment. Avoid excessive alcohol and inform the doctor before surgery or investigations using contrast dye.
