What is it used for?
Vancomycin is an antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by certain bacteria, including some resistant infections. When given by mouth, it is used mainly for certain bacterial infections of the intestine, such as Clostridioides difficile infection.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from building their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria or prevents them from multiplying.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed. The route depends on the formulation: injectable vancomycin is usually given into a vein by a healthcare professional, while oral vancomycin should be taken exactly as directed. Do not change the dose or stop treatment early without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach upset, diarrhoea, pain at the injection site, and redness, flushing or itching during infusion may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, hearing problems, previous reactions to vancomycin, or use of other medicines that may affect the kidneys or hearing. Medical monitoring may be needed during treatment. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, severe rash, swelling, severe or persistent diarrhoea, or reduced urination.
