What is it used for?
Ursodeoxycholic acid is used to treat certain liver and bile-flow disorders, including primary biliary cholangitis. It may also be prescribed to dissolve some cholesterol gallstones when the gallbladder is functioning properly.

How does it work?
It improves the composition and flow of bile and reduces the amount of cholesterol released into bile. This can help protect liver cells and gradually dissolve certain cholesterol gallstones.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the capsule or tablet with water, preferably with food if advised. Treatment may need regular liver tests and follow-up. Do not stop it without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea or loose stools, abdominal discomfort, nausea and constipation may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about gallstones, bile-duct blockage, acute gallbladder inflammation or other liver problems. It may not be suitable for calcified stones or a poorly functioning gallbladder. Seek medical advice if severe or persistent abdominal pain, jaundice or worsening diarrhoea occurs. Tell the doctor about pregnancy, breastfeeding and all other medicines; antacids containing aluminium and some cholesterol-binding medicines may reduce its absorption.
