What is it used for?
Urokinase is used in hospitals to dissolve dangerous blood clots in blood vessels, such as clots causing pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis. It may also be used to clear certain blocked medical catheters.

How does it work?
It activates plasminogen, a natural substance in the body, to form plasmin. Plasmin breaks down the fibrin framework of blood clots.

How to take/use it
This injection is given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital, usually into a vein or through a medical catheter. The dose and treatment duration depend on the condition being treated and must be decided by the treating doctor.

Common side effects
Bleeding, bruising, bleeding from injection sites, low blood pressure, fever, nausea and allergic reactions may occur.

Precautions
Urokinase can cause serious bleeding. Tell the doctor about any bleeding disorder, recent surgery or injury, previous stroke, uncontrolled high blood pressure, stomach ulcer or use of blood-thinning medicines. Seek immediate medical help for heavy or unusual bleeding, severe headache, weakness, difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat.
