What is it used for?
Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs), especially bladder infections. It is not used for viral infections.
How does it work?
It is concentrated in the urine, where it damages important parts of susceptible bacteria and stops them from growing.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with food or milk to reduce stomach upset. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, headache, and dark yellow or brown urine may occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is kidney disease, G6PD deficiency, liver or lung disease, anaemia, nerve problems, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, persistent cough, yellowing of the skin or eyes, numbness or tingling, severe diarrhoea, or an allergic reaction.
