What is it used for?
Ursodeoxycholic acid is used to treat certain liver and bile-flow disorders, including primary biliary cholangitis. It may also be prescribed to dissolve selected cholesterol gallstones when the gallbladder is functioning properly.

How does it work?
It improves the flow and composition of bile, making bile less likely to damage liver cells and less likely to form cholesterol deposits. This can help dissolve some cholesterol gallstones over time.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the tablet with water. Take it regularly and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Regular liver tests or scans may be needed during treatment.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, loose stools, abdominal discomfort, nausea, or indigestion. Contact a doctor if diarrhoea is severe or persistent.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision, especially if there is liver disease, gallbladder inflammation, or suspected blockage of the bile ducts. It may not be suitable for all types of gallstones. Tell the doctor about pregnancy, breastfeeding, or other medicines, particularly antacids containing aluminium or medicines that bind bile acids, as these may reduce its absorption.
