What is it used for?
Ursodeoxycholic acid is used under medical supervision to treat certain chronic liver and bile-flow conditions, including primary biliary cholangitis. It may also be used to dissolve certain small cholesterol gallstones when surgery is not suitable.

How does it work?
It improves the flow and composition of bile, helping reduce cholesterol buildup in bile. This can help protect liver cells and dissolve some cholesterol gallstones.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the tablet with water. The dose and treatment duration depend on the condition being treated. Regular liver tests or scans may be needed during treatment.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea or loose stools, abdominal discomfort, nausea and indigestion. Itching may occur, especially in people being treated for liver disease.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision. Tell the doctor about liver disease, blockage of the bile ducts, gallbladder inflammation or other gallbladder problems. It is not suitable for all types of gallstones. Antacids containing aluminium and some cholesterol-lowering medicines may reduce its absorption, so they may need to be taken separately. Seek medical advice if diarrhoea is severe or persistent, or if jaundice or worsening abdominal pain occurs.
