What is it used for?
Ursodeoxycholic acid is used for certain liver and bile-flow disorders. In selected patients, it is also used to dissolve cholesterol gallstones and help prevent some gallstones.

How does it work?
It makes bile less likely to form cholesterol deposits and helps improve the flow of bile. This may reduce the harmful effects of bile acids on liver cells.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the medicine with water. It is usually taken with food; follow the instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist. Do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, loose stools, abdominal discomfort, nausea and vomiting. Itching or worsening of existing itching may also occur.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision, as liver function and the condition of the gallbladder or bile ducts may need monitoring. Tell the doctor about gallbladder inflammation, bile-duct blockage, severe liver disease or frequent abdominal pain. Antacids containing aluminium and some cholesterol-binding medicines can reduce its absorption, so ask about suitable spacing between medicines.
