What is it used for?
Lactulose is mainly used to relieve constipation by making stools softer and easier to pass. It may also be prescribed under medical supervision to help reduce high ammonia levels in people with certain liver conditions.

How does it work?
It draws water into the bowel, softening the stool and helping bowel movements. Gut bacteria break it down into substances that stimulate bowel movement.

How to take/use it
Take it by mouth exactly as directed by a doctor or according to the product label. Measure the liquid carefully using a proper measuring device. It may be taken alone or mixed with water or another suitable drink. Drink enough fluids unless fluid restriction has been advised.

Common side effects
Gas, bloating, stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhoea. These effects may be more likely if too much is taken.

Precautions
Do not use it without medical advice if there is severe or unexplained abdominal pain, suspected bowel blockage, or vomiting. Prolonged or severe diarrhoea can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. People with diabetes or those following a low-sugar diet should ask a doctor or pharmacist before use, as some formulations contain sugars. Seek medical advice if constipation persists or worsens.
