What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, throat, airways and urinary tract. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria or prevents them from growing.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed. This dry syrup must be prepared with water as directed on the label or by a pharmacist. Shake the prepared suspension well before each dose and measure it with an oral syringe or measuring spoon. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and indigestion. Mild rash may also occur.

Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or certain penicillin antibiotics. Tell the doctor if there is kidney disease. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe rash, or severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea. Use only for a confirmed or suspected bacterial infection as prescribed.
