What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the throat, ears, urinary tract and respiratory system. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by a doctor and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Disperse the tablet in water before taking if instructed on the product label. It can generally be taken with or without food.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting. Skin rash may also occur.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or certain penicillin antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a widespread skin rash.
