What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, abdomen, blood, bones and joints, and brain coverings. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection, so it should be used only as prescribed. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in liver function tests.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any previous allergy to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillins or other medicines. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a widespread skin rash. Use in newborn babies, especially those with jaundice or who may need calcium-containing injections, requires special medical assessment.
