What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints, and brain coverings. It may also be used before some surgeries to help prevent bacterial infections.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall, which stops the infection from spreading.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain or swelling at the injection site, diarrhoea, nausea, rash, and changes in blood test results may occur.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to ceftriaxone, penicillin or other antibiotics. Seek medical help for severe rash, breathing difficulty, swelling, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use in newborn babies and in people with liver or kidney problems requires medical supervision. Do not take calcium-containing intravenous products at the same time unless specifically advised by a doctor.
