What is it used for?
Isotretinoin is an oral prescription medicine used mainly to treat severe acne, including painful nodular or cystic acne that has not improved with other treatments.

How does it work?
It reduces oil production from the skin’s sebaceous glands, helps prevent blocked pores, and reduces acne-related inflammation.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the dermatologist. Swallow the capsule whole with water and do not crush or chew it. Do not share this medicine or change the dose without medical advice. Regular follow-up and blood tests may be needed.

Common side effects
Dry, cracked lips; dry skin; dry or irritated eyes; nose dryness or nosebleeds; headache; and muscle or joint aches. Blood tests may show increased liver enzymes or blood fats.

Precautions
Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It can cause serious birth defects; people who can become pregnant must follow the prescribed pregnancy-prevention and testing requirements. Tell the doctor about liver disease, high cholesterol or triglycerides, mood changes, or vision problems. Avoid vitamin A supplements and tetracycline antibiotics unless specifically approved by the doctor. Avoid blood donation during treatment and for the period advised after treatment. Seek medical help for severe headache, vision changes, severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or major mood changes.
