What is it used for?
Used under specialist supervision for certain conditions involving low blood sodium (hyponatraemia). Tolvaptan may also be prescribed for specific kidney conditions, depending on the treatment plan and product indication.
How does it work?
Tolvaptan blocks vasopressin V2 receptors in the kidneys, increasing the excretion of water while helping retain sodium. This can increase blood sodium levels in selected patients.
How to take/use it
Take only under specialist supervision and follow the prescribed dose. Do not change your fluid intake or dose without medical advice.
Common side effects
Thirst, dry mouth, increased urination, and dehydration may occur.
Precautions
Close monitoring of blood sodium and hydration is important because sodium correction that occurs too quickly can cause serious neurological injury. Liver function monitoring may also be required. Inform your doctor about liver disease, kidney problems, dehydration, or other medicines. Seek urgent medical attention for confusion, difficulty speaking, seizures, or severe weakness.
