What is it used for?
Tolvaptan is used under medical supervision to treat low blood sodium levels (hyponatraemia) and, in selected patients, to slow the worsening of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). The exact use depends on the doctor's prescription.

How does it work?
It blocks the effect of vasopressin, a hormone that makes the kidneys retain water. This helps the kidneys remove excess water while retaining sodium and, in ADPKD, may slow the growth of kidney cysts.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the tablet with water. Do not change the dose, limit or increase fluid intake, or stop treatment without medical advice. Treatment for low sodium may need to be started and monitored in a hospital, and regular blood tests may be required.

Common side effects
Thirst, increased urination, dry mouth, dizziness, headache, nausea, tiredness and dehydration. Changes in liver tests may occur, particularly during long-term treatment.

Precautions
This medicine requires medical monitoring. Seek medical advice for severe thirst, very little urine, marked dizziness, confusion, or symptoms of liver problems such as unusual tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or pain in the upper right abdomen. Tell the doctor about liver or kidney disease and all other medicines. Avoid alcohol if it worsens dizziness or dehydration. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically advised by a doctor.
