What is it used for?
Tofacitinib is used to treat certain inflammatory autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ulcerative colitis, when prescribed by a specialist.

How does it work?
It blocks Janus kinase (JAK) enzymes involved in immune-system signalling. This helps reduce the inflammation and overactive immune response causing symptoms.

How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Swallow the tablet with water and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Regular monitoring may be needed during treatment.

Common side effects
Upper respiratory tract infections, headache, diarrhoea, nausea, increased cholesterol and acne may occur.

Precautions
This medicine can increase the risk of serious infections, including tuberculosis and shingles. Screening for infections and monitoring of blood counts, liver function and cholesterol may be required. Avoid live vaccines unless specifically advised. It may increase the risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke and some cancers; seek urgent medical help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, severe headache or painful swelling in a leg. Tell the doctor about pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver or kidney disease, and all other medicines being taken.
