What is it used for?
Tofacitinib is used to treat inflammatory autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ulcerative colitis and certain types of juvenile arthritis. It is usually prescribed when other treatments have not worked well enough or are not suitable.

How does it work?
It blocks Janus kinase (JAK) proteins involved in immune-system signalling. This helps reduce the inflammation and overactive immune response that causes symptoms.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet with water; it may generally be taken with or without food. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Upper respiratory infections, headache, diarrhoea, nausea, high blood pressure and increased cholesterol levels may occur. Shingles and other infections can also occur.

Precautions
Tofacitinib can increase the risk of serious infections, tuberculosis, shingles, blood clots, heart problems and certain cancers. Tell the doctor about any current or repeated infection, tuberculosis or hepatitis, heart disease, cancer, blood-clot history, or liver or kidney problems. Screening and blood tests may be needed during treatment. Avoid live vaccines unless specifically advised. Seek urgent medical help for severe infection symptoms, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, or painful swelling of an arm or leg. Tell the doctor if pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, and before taking other medicines that suppress the immune system.
