What is it used for?
Thyroxine sodium is used as thyroid hormone replacement to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces the thyroid hormone that the body is not producing in sufficient amounts.

How does it work?
It supplies a synthetic form of thyroxine, a hormone normally made by the thyroid gland. This helps restore normal body functions affected by low thyroid hormone levels.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably on an empty stomach with water and at the same time each day. Do not stop or change the dose without medical advice. Keep a suitable gap between this medicine and iron or calcium supplements, as they can reduce its absorption.

Common side effects
When the dose is higher than needed, side effects may include fast or irregular heartbeat, nervousness, tremor, sweating, difficulty sleeping, headache, diarrhoea and weight loss.

Precautions
Regular blood tests are needed to monitor thyroid hormone levels and adjust the dose. Tell the doctor about heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy, adrenal problems or use of iron, calcium and other medicines. Seek medical help for chest pain, severe palpitations or breathing difficulty. This medicine should not be used for weight loss.
