What is it used for?
Thyroxine sodium is used as thyroid hormone replacement to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It may also be prescribed for certain thyroid conditions to maintain normal thyroid hormone levels.

How does it work?
It provides a synthetic form of thyroxine, a hormone normally produced by the thyroid gland. This helps restore the body's metabolism and other functions to normal when the thyroid does not make enough hormone.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually on an empty stomach with water and at the same time each day. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Keep calcium, iron, antacids and similar products separated from this medicine as advised by a doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Side effects are more likely if the dose is too high and may include palpitations, fast heartbeat, nervousness, shaking, sweating, headache, difficulty sleeping, diarrhoea and unexplained weight loss.

Precautions
Regular blood tests are needed to check thyroid hormone levels and adjust the dose. Tell the doctor about heart disease, diabetes, bone problems or adrenal gland problems. Seek medical advice for chest pain, severe or irregular heartbeat or marked breathlessness. Inform the doctor if pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, and before taking other medicines or supplements.
