What is it used for?
Thyroxine sodium is used mainly to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) by replacing the thyroid hormone that the body lacks. It may also be prescribed for certain thyroid-related conditions under medical supervision.

How does it work?
It replaces thyroxine (T4), a hormone normally produced by the thyroid gland. This helps restore normal body functions affected by low thyroid hormone levels.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day, usually on an empty stomach. Swallow with water and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Keep calcium or iron supplements and antacids separated from this medicine as advised by a doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Side effects are more likely if the dose is too high and may include fast or irregular heartbeat, nervousness, trembling, sweating, difficulty sleeping, headache, diarrhoea and weight loss.

Precautions
Regular blood tests are needed to check thyroid hormone levels and adjust the dose. Tell the doctor if there is heart disease, diabetes, or a problem with the adrenal glands. Inform the doctor about pregnancy or plans to become pregnant. Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements being taken, especially calcium, iron and antacids. Seek medical help for chest pain, severe breathlessness or a very fast or irregular heartbeat.
