What is it used for?
Thiopentone injection is mainly used in hospitals to induce general anaesthesia before surgery or other procedures. It may also be used by specialists to control certain severe seizures.
How does it work?
It is a fast-acting barbiturate that slows activity in the brain, causing unconsciousness and reducing brain activity.
How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein only by a trained doctor or anaesthetist. Breathing, blood pressure and heart rate must be closely monitored during and after use. It must not be self-administered.
Common side effects
Drowsiness, dizziness, slow or shallow breathing, low blood pressure, nausea or vomiting, coughing, and pain or irritation at the injection site may occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about breathing problems, severe low blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, allergies, or a history of porphyria. Emergency medical support must be available because it can cause serious breathing or heart-related problems, allergic reactions, or prolonged unconsciousness.
