What is it used for?
Tamsulosin is used to relieve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), such as difficulty starting urination, weak urine flow, urgency and frequent urination.
How does it work?
It relaxes the muscles in the prostate and the bladder outlet, helping urine flow more easily. It does not shrink the prostate.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually after the same meal each day. Swallow the prolonged-release capsule/tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew or open it.
Common side effects
Dizziness, headache, blocked or runny nose, and ejaculation problems may occur.
Precautions
It may cause dizziness or a fall in blood pressure, especially when standing up; rise slowly. Avoid driving if affected. Tell the doctor about dizziness or fainting, severe liver or kidney problems, or if cataract or glaucoma surgery is planned. Inform the doctor about other medicines, especially medicines for erectile dysfunction or blood pressure.
