What is it used for?
Ticagrelor is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and other serious problems caused by blood clots in people with acute coronary syndrome or after certain heart procedures such as coronary stent placement. It is usually used with another antiplatelet medicine as prescribed.

How does it work?
It prevents platelets in the blood from sticking together and forming harmful clots.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Do not stop it suddenly unless the prescribing doctor advises this, especially after a stent. If a dose is missed, follow the doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions rather than taking extra medicine.

Common side effects
Bleeding or bruising, shortness of breath, headache, dizziness, nausea and diarrhoea.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any unusual or prolonged bleeding, black stools, vomiting blood or severe headache. Inform the doctor before surgery or dental treatment. Use with caution if there is a history of bleeding, stomach ulcer, stroke, liver disease or breathing problems. Tell the doctor about all medicines being taken, as some medicines can increase bleeding or affect ticagrelor. Seek urgent medical help for severe bleeding or serious breathing difficulty.
