What is it used for?
Sucralfate is used to treat and protect ulcers in the stomach or upper intestine. It may also be prescribed for other acid-related digestive problems.
How does it work?
It forms a protective coating over damaged areas of the stomach and intestine, helping shield them from acid and digestive enzymes so they can heal.
How to take/use it
Shake the suspension well before use. Take it on an empty stomach exactly as prescribed, usually before meals and at bedtime. Do not take other medicines at the same time unless advised, as sucralfate can affect their absorption.
Common side effects
Constipation, nausea, dry mouth and stomach discomfort.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is kidney disease, difficulty swallowing, or pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical advice if severe or persistent stomach pain, vomiting blood, or black stools occur.
