What is it used for?
Used to relieve pain and discomfort caused by acid-related stomach problems such as gastritis, peptic ulcers and heartburn. It helps protect irritated areas in the stomach and food pipe.
How does it work?
Sucralfate forms a protective coating over irritated or ulcerated tissue, shielding it from stomach acid. Oxetacaine is a local anaesthetic that helps reduce pain in the affected area.
How to take/use it
Use exactly as prescribed by the doctor. If it is a liquid, shake the bottle well before use. Take other medicines at a different time as advised, because sucralfate can reduce their absorption.
Common side effects
Constipation, nausea, dry mouth and stomach discomfort may occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is kidney disease, difficulty swallowing, or a history of bowel blockage. Take medical advice during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist, worsen, or there is vomiting blood or black stools.
