What is it used for?
Sodium chloride 0.9% injection is a sterile salt-water solution used in hospitals to replace lost fluids and sodium and chloride, such as during dehydration or low blood volume. It may also be used by healthcare professionals as a diluent or to flush intravenous lines, depending on the product and clinical need.
How does it work?
It adds water and sodium chloride to the bloodstream, helping restore fluid and electrolyte balance.
How to take/use it
This injection is given into a vein or used for other medical purposes only by a healthcare professional. The amount and rate depend on the patient’s condition and must be decided by the treating clinician.
Common side effects
Fluid retention, swelling, increased blood sodium or chloride levels, and irritation or pain at the injection site may occur. Excessive amounts can cause fluid overload.
Precautions
Use carefully in people with heart failure, kidney problems, high blood pressure, swelling, or conditions causing high sodium levels. Medical monitoring may be needed during treatment. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, severe swelling, confusion, or worsening symptoms.
