What is it used for?
Sitagliptin 50 mg + Metformin 500 mg is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
Sitagliptin helps the body release insulin when blood sugar is high and reduces the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar. Metformin reduces glucose production by the liver and helps the body use insulin better.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with food to reduce stomach upset. Do not change the dose, stop treatment, or crush or split the tablet unless advised by a doctor or pharmacist. Follow the prescribed diet, exercise and blood sugar monitoring plan.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache and reduced appetite. Low blood sugar may occur, especially when used with insulin or sulfonylurea medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, dehydration, heavy alcohol use, heart failure, or a history of pancreatitis. Kidney function should be checked before and during treatment. Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, extreme weakness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Long-term metformin use may reduce vitamin B12 levels. Inform the doctor before surgery or certain contrast-dye scans.
