What is it used for?
Sitagliptin 50 mg + metformin 1000 mg is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
Sitagliptin helps the body release more insulin after meals and reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver. Metformin also reduces glucose production by the liver and helps the body use insulin more effectively.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet as directed and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. If a dose is missed, follow the instructions provided by the prescriber or package leaflet.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, indigestion, reduced appetite, headache and symptoms of an upper respiratory infection may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when used with insulin or sulfonylurea medicines.

Precautions
Kidney function should be checked before and during treatment; this medicine may not be suitable in severe kidney disease. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, unusual weakness, breathing difficulty or severe abdominal pain. Tell the doctor about liver disease, heavy alcohol use, pancreatitis, or planned surgery or contrast-dye investigations. Long-term metformin use may reduce vitamin B12 levels. Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
