What is it used for?
Cefuroxime axetil is an antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest, urinary tract and skin. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from building their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria and helps clear the infection.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and preferably after food, as this helps absorption. Swallow the tablet with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not take a double dose if a dose is missed.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefuroxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or certain penicillin antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea, or other medicines being used. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, a severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
