What is it used for?
Cefuroxime axetil is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, lungs, urinary tract and skin. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take the tablet exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Taking it after food may help the body absorb it better. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew it unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache and skin rash.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefuroxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or certain penicillin antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any medicines used to reduce stomach acid. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe skin rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
