What is it used for?
This is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It does not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
How does it work?
Cefpodoxime stops bacteria from forming their protective cell wall. Potassium clavulanate helps protect cefpodoxime from enzymes produced by some bacteria, improving its antibacterial action.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Follow the instructions on the label regarding food, take doses at evenly spaced times, and complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Do not share or reuse leftover antibiotics.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or indigestion, and headache. Skin rash may also occur.
Precautions
Do not use if allergic to cefpodoxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin-type antibiotics. Inform the doctor about kidney disease or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can cause resistance.
